In fact, this review will focus entirely on the Windows Media Player component. However, this leaves some interesting questions unanswered. By comparison, the Apple iPod and Apple TV integrate the iTunes multimedia components with the OS.

WindowsPlayer, by contrast, is a CD-based music player which, unlike any other on Windows, is designed from the ground-up to support’second life’ tracks. These are tracks that may be stored on a CD but which are not necessarily visible in Windows Explorer/My Computer, nor do they have a separate directory of their own. WindowsPlayer is the only player that can find them and play them. Other players can see them, but can’t play them; they must be dragged to them in some way.

WindowsPlayer provides desktop integration and access to a large range of features, but it is not going to be perfect. It’s based on Windows 7 and I think it does WMP 10’s initial offering quite well, and is stable, but it doesn’t look, feel or behave like anything else on Windows. And it has some limitations. It doesnt work with all music, but only with Disc Player format tracks. It doesnt support multi-selecting tracks for playback, but only single-selects. There’s no keyboard shortcuts, and no obvious way to browse tracks by Artist or Album.

Nor can it play UMG or MusePack (and hence OGG) music files. Nor, as it happens, can it play a bit of every file. If I try to drag a bunch of tracks to it, it doesn’t always play them all – only the latest one plays. I could change that, but it’s not a perfect experience, and it may get worse as WindowsPlayer cracked evolves to support the new APIs. It’s good though, because it’s got features that make it the most universal Windows player of any that I’ve seen to date.
